Overview: Multi-Gen Trip to Iceland and Norway Cruise

I took another trip! In the next few days (or weeks) I’m going to share journals from the amazing experience of visiting Iceland and Norway with my parents, my husband and our 14-year-old son. Here’s the itinerary:

Day 1: Fly from Oakland to Chicago O’Hare. Spend the night at my parents house in Wisconsin.

Day 2: Return to O’Hare in the evening for an overnight flight to Reykjavik, Iceland.

Day 3: Upon arrival in Iceland, pick up rental car and drive straight to the Blue Lagoon. Check into Airbnb in the Grandi neighborhood. Spend the rest of the day chilling and acclimating to Reykjavik.

Day 4: Explore Reykjavik. Visit the Settlement Exhibition, Hallgrimskirkja (church) and the Iceland Phallological Museum. Visit Lebowski Bar.

Day 5: Drive the Golden Circle. Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Hot Spring Area, Gullfoss waterfall and more.

Day 6: Fly to Bergen, Norway and check into the Moxy Bergen.

Day 7: Explore Bergen. Take the Bryggen Walking Tour and the Floibanen Funicular.

Day 8: Board Havila Castor ferry/cruise ship at 4 p.m. Full list of ports.

Day 9: On the boat: Enjoy fjord views, then disembark at Gerainger Fjord in the afternoon for a bus tour of Trollstigen, Trollveggen and other scenic viewpoints.

Day 10: On the boat: Visit Trondheim by vintage tram. During the night, pass by the home villages of both my paternal great grandparents.

Day 11: On the boat: Visit Bodø and Svolvær on foot. After midnight, enter spectacular Trollfjord.

Day 12: On the boat: Arctic Circle crossing ceremony. Visit Tromso on foot and meet our Norwegian cousin.

Day 13: On the boat: Visit Honningsvåg on foot. Visit Davvi Siida, a Sami family’s summer reindeer camp and lodging.

Day 14: Cruise ends in Kirkenes. Tour Andersgrotta bomb shelter and SnowHotel. Check into Airbnb.

Day 15: Fly to Oslo. Meet Norwegian cousins at Eidsvoll 1814. Check into Scandic Byporten. Enjoy one evening in Oslo.

Day 16: Fly to ORD via Reykjavik (my parents and son) and SFO via Amsterdam (Erik and I).
